Should I switch stylists or switch salons?

I really like the hair salon I've been going to.

I've only been there twice and have enjoyed my experiences their.

The first time I called in a bit of a rush and was scheduled with the only person available. Second time I booked the same person, in hopes to be a regular.

But was slightly disappointed, and a tad jealous of other people at the chairs around me.

This salon has price levels...and I want to switch to someone higher on the rank, but know that their chair is ACROSS from the person I've been to twice.

Should I switch, or just start over at a new place?

Thank youShould I switch stylists or switch salons?
why were you jealous ? Were they getting better haircuts ?

If you like your stylist %26amp; just want to change the cut itself, just tell her.

If you want a different stylist for some reason, just tell her you would like to try the more expensive tart. They don't care, happens all the time.Should I switch stylists or switch salons?
Ooh, its kind of a tricky situation. But, you are paying THEM, so I would go up a level. Your hairdresser is a professional, and she should act like one if you switch. If she does get upset and shoot you an evil glare or whatever, so what? You'll have fabulous hair!

Also, you've only been with her twice, so its not like you have this amazing client-hairdresser relationship, she probably wont even notice/care.

If you are really worried about it, just say something about you wanted to try something different, or your friend reccommended you tried the upper level hairdresser. Make something up. A little white lie.

But seriously, dont stress. Most likely It'll be no big deal!
Or you can try to find out the other ones day off.
i don't mind awkward situations so i'd just up myself a level but if you dislike them i'd say switch salons period.

Do stylists at discount salons (like smartstyle or fantastic sam's) make a living wage?

I read that salary studies do not always consider what the stylists are these salons are making. I am planning on going to cosmetology school and would like to work in a high end salon but just in case that does not work out I want to know if I will be able to live on the pay. I am not looking to become rich cutting hair but I would like to start a family in a few years without having to struggle to pay every bill.

I am about to graduate with a bachelor degree but I really hate the field it is in and want a job I enjoy going to.Do stylists at discount salons (like smartstyle or fantastic sam's) make a living wage?
I have worked in both types of Salons. I was making a lot of money at the high end one, until the economy started to get bad. I made 1/3 less gross pay from one year to the next due to the economy. So I went to work at a Fantastic Sams, and I was really busy there, so I ended up making really good money there. Since you make commission in most Salons, you have to be busy to make money. Even if the prices are lower, if you are busy you are going to make more. Good Luck! I love doing hair. I have a family now, and it works great with our schedule for me to be a stylist.

Contact the Texas Workforce Commission.

I admit it...im scared of hair stylists. can someone give me advice to make my visit to the hair salon better?

Okay so hair stylists really scare me.

i never know whats going on back there because its not like you have eyes in the back of your head so you don't know if they are cutting off 1 inch or 5 inches.

they are always so.....happy.

if anyone is a hair stylist can you give me advice on getting over my fear. i really like the guy who cuts my hair. he does a great job. for some reason i am not as scared of female stylists as i am of male stylists but the thing is...hes my friends dad and its so.....akward!

i want to bring in a pic of what i want but i would be embarressed and i dont know what i want!

ideas....?I admit it...im scared of hair stylists. can someone give me advice to make my visit to the hair salon better?
I'm scared of hair stylists too lol and i'm in school to be one! I'll try to not be so happy once I get out lol. I don't like people cutting my hair cause they really could be hacking off more than I want. They should point to where they will be cutting and ask if it's short enough before they start chopping away. I always ask. Taking a picture in is a really good way to get them to know exactly what you want, and a lot of people do it so don't be embarrassed! If you don't know what you want, then I don't suggest getting anything more than a trim or long layers when you go, just cause you don't know what you want so you probably wouldn't like a drastic change unless YOU wanted it. If the guy does a good job, stick with him! It's hard to find someone you can trust to do your hair. I wish you luck and hope you get over your hair stylist fear!I admit it...im scared of hair stylists. can someone give me advice to make my visit to the hair salon better?
he is professional

so dont worry

the best thing is to take a picture with you

tell him what you want

and ask him if he has any other pictures he would recomend for your hair type

don't be shy

if you dont like his idea.. then let him know

he honestly would rather make you happy then make you cry

and for goodness sake.. always go to someone you trust
I have this problem too. You shouldn't be intimidated by your stylist, especialy when choosing a style you want and settling for something different. Try setting up an appointment so you can sit and talk about your hair and what style you want. You both should be able to come to a decision of what you want. You can ask them what they're doing to your hair too, they're not gonna charge you extra for a tutorial. Just ask them if they could explain what they're doing and why because you want to know how to take care of and style your hair. You always want to know what you should and shouldn't do to your hair.

Hope this helps.

Well, one thing you can help your friend is to introduce your friends to her as a hair stylist because she could make good money cutting hair in your place. This way, while she's still looking for a working place she could earn extra cash on the side or she could go to people's house and cut their hair.Hair salons in Dallas texas?? looking for job that pays good being a hair stylist?

HELP PRO STYLISTS!- I was a bleach blonde (not brassy) & went 2 salon 4 lowlights and now my hair GREY!!?

I am naturally light brown/dirty blonde but have been bleaching my own hair w/ pro dye for ten years. It was a gorgeous platinum/light gold but not brassy, blonde and i went to this posh salon for dimension. (multi-dimensional ';streaks'; of 25% a really dark brown to match my eye brows/roots, 25% the platinum color it was, and 50% some warm but not orange color inbetween there to help them blend). She started foiling at 3:45 didn't get done until 9:30. When hair dryed, OMG!, it was GREYish-Greenish/ horrifying. (I paid extra to have this stylist do it because supposedly she was a ';tier II';). She addmitted it was ';ashy'; and said shed try to fix it this morning. I went and she did a soap bath then a gloss with a bit of golden hue to warm it up. Nothing. did it again. Nothing. It isn't as bad but it is still definitley GREY/Green/ it looks like I stuck my head in a bucket of toxic waste. People are staring at me %26amp; my life is on hold till I get it fixed. What can i do? Please help, thxHELP PRO STYLISTS!- I was a bleach blonde (not brassy) %26amp; went 2 salon 4 lowlights and now my hair GREY!!?
Let me tell you, this women was a freaking idiot and she is suppose to be a PRO! Even when you are doing low lights over hair that has been bleached you need to put back the red tones in the hair before you put brown over it. Just like you would do if you were doing a full color over the hair. Your hair turned green because she put the brown dye with a green base right over your hair that was bleached, she needed to use a red filler with the brown hair dye. She put a golden hue to try to fix it! NO! Get your money back and do not let this women touch your hair again. You need to have hair color correction done by a real pro.. I know what you mean about putting your life on hold.I've been there, still trying to grow the mess out that a so called pro did to me. If you just want the color out try using Prell shampoo or Dawn dish detergent, it will fade the color out allot, make sure to use a good conditioner too. Good luckHELP PRO STYLISTS!- I was a bleach blonde (not brassy) %26amp; went 2 salon 4 lowlights and now my hair GREY!!?
Insist on getting your money back, then go to a beauty supply store, ask for advice from the people working there and get a friend to help you fix it at home. My friend had a similar experience and that's what she did. Or go to another stylist and let them clean it up but definitely Get Your Money Back.
WOW u should go to a different salon e-mail me and tell me ur area where u live.
i'm not commpletly sure, but maybe if you re-bleach ur hair it would help?
Oh my god! NEVER GO BACK TO THAT LADY! It sounds like she had a problem mixing the color, and/or the color reacting to the way you bleach your hair. DO NOT go walking around with that hair anymore, run straight to the nicest salon in your area (it's worth it!) and book an appointment (request a coloring pro) and explain your story to them. Have them re-dye it for you and you should be good to go. If for some reason you are too low on $$ or some other reason, buy a specialty repairing shampoo and conditioner and wash with that and re bleach your hair. GOOD LUCK! I hope this helps....%26lt;3

email me if you need it..surfcomtesse@yahoo.com
Okay, you have to take corrective action.

First, put on a hat or headscarf. Run to your nearest H%26amp;M, American Apparrel, or even Target to pick up a headscarf or hat if you need a fashionable one to wear while you get this straightened out.

Second, go to the Salon and make a FUSS. Demand your money back. Wear your headscarf to the salon, and defiantly take it off while you're at the salon to show them how much your stylist messed up. She is supposed to know better about mixing dyes and coloring properly.

Once they give you a refund (they must, or you can report them to the Better Business Bureau for ruining your hair) put your hat back on and research for the best corrective colorist in your area. If I knew where you lived I could help. If you live somewhere major such as NYC, LA, or Chicago it will be relatively easy to find a well-known and respected Corrective Colorist.

If you do not, you need to do your research. Google for corrective colorists in your area and then research their name and salon to make sure the same thing did not happen to someone who went to them.

Next, make an emergency appointment at the salon by calling them and telling them about the problem you're experiencing. Let them know you need to get in as soon as possible. Be prepared to pay a lot of money and perhaps go in for several sessions of correcting. The stylist will probably have to strip your hair of the color that has recently been placed on it and will have to do some corrective work to get it to a reasonable color.

In the meantime take a bath, relax, read, and avoid all mirrors. Everything will work out in just a few days' time!

Also, check out this site: http://www.yelp.com start an account there and review the salon you went to so that other users and people out there can avoid going to the salon and having the same problem!

Even though you've been dying your hair at home for years, please do not try to correct your color yourself or with friends, unless they're a professional. Good stylists have gone through years of chemistry at college to teach them how dyes react with one another and what limitations they face when they're coloring and correcting.

    Good luck!
    SUE HER!!!!
    Lucy A is right.

I emailed you pretty much the same thing...

You can get toner, which in nonperoxide, at a beauty supply store.

It may help if you run some thru your hair at home, even once a week for like 5 minutes,

I know this is not what you want to hear... but you really might consider cutting it in layers.

I am so sorry for your troubles.

You SHOULD also demand your money back.

    i dont know...

Just because a hair salon is good, does that mean its stylists are good, too?

I made an appointment today to get my hair cut at this HIGHLY RATED salon.

However, on this rating site, there is no mention of my hair stylist because she's new.

Does that mean she might do a bad job? I mean, if she got a job a good salon, that must mean she's good, too, right?

Doesn't the owner (who is supposedly this fabulous hair stylist) make sure that the stylist is good before hiring them? How? Does he watch them cut someone's hair, and judge them on that?

I have long, thick, jet black hair that I'm afraid will get butchered, but this stylist sounds nice (I talked to her on the phone) and she has VERY good prices. I don't think I'd be able to afford having the owner cut my hair.Just because a hair salon is good, does that mean its stylists are good, too?
The biggest reason that a salon has a good rating is because of the stylists. If not for them, it wouldn't have a good rating.

I hope I helped! :)Just because a hair salon is good, does that mean its stylists are good, too?
A saloon is rated by its stylists without stylist and hair saloon cant do anything LOL. You said shes new which means shell have a fresh mind on how to cut your hair, and she should be good if she got hired. You can ask the owner or someone else how he/she knows that shes a good stylist.

    Hope this helps!
Well a salon is rated by its stylists. If the stylists were bad it would be a badly rated salon.
Yeap, I agree with Alex. (:

Don't be jaded because one crummy hairdresser left a bad taste in your mouth! Give another one a chance. Let her know exactly what you want and don't be afraid to let her know you're nervous, due to past bad experiences. It'll keep her cautious that she's doing just what you asked for!

I'd recommend some long surface layers in your hair, with some perimeter layers (layers around your face). I bet it would be beautiful!

Go to an advanced education salon. Ask for the highest level Stylist they offer. You cant go wrong.

So in Singapore, it is so difficult to find real good stylist with price charge that don't burn a hole in your pocket. I found mine. My favourite would be a salon at Ang Mo Kio avenue 1 behind Christ the King church.

I always cut my hair there and furthermore it's really cheap as I'm a regular there so they always charge me $10. ('o,') All three stylists are really good. Although I don't live in ang mo kio, I would go there just to get my hair cut as I always leave satisfied. =)Best pick for Hair Salon with reasonable price and excellent stylists?

  • Are you supposed to tip stylists in those chain salons like Hair Cuttery, Fantastic Sams, etc?

I will be going to one of these places for the first time and I am unsure. I'd like to tip them for their great service.

Do we tip them? If so, what percentage of the bill is proper?

Thank you.Are you supposed to tip stylists in those chain salons like Hair Cuttery, Fantastic Sams, etc?
Yes you must tip them because if you come back they'll remember you and jack your head up. When I used to get hair cuts (bald now), I usually gave a $5 tip for a $15 haircut. That's kind of a lot, but its my head and my hair we're talking about. They never sent me out of the chair looking like chewbacca so I compensated them for it. If I were you I'd at least give them 20%.Are you supposed to tip stylists in those chain salons like Hair Cuttery, Fantastic Sams, etc?
    Sure, just as you would tip someone in the chain restaurants of ';Denny's'; '; Norms'; or ';House of Pancakes';
Yep. Your suppose to tip any hairstylist, even students. Of course, you don't HAVE too.

    Around 10 percent.
I tip...each and every time. I usually tip anywhere from 10 - 15%, depending on what was done.
15-20% if you're happy with the work they've done to your hair.
yes. tip should be 10-20% like in a restaurant.

We own a salon in the Denver area...and our question is how do we get hair stylists with clientele to work at?

our salon? we have tried everything, advertising in the paper to mailing out postcards...any ideas? We own a salon in the Denver area...and our question is how do we get hair stylists with clientele to work at?
Sounds like you're doing what needs to be done, if you want to spend a lot of money, you could do a tv commercial.

Why not try to hire someone w/out a clientele since you're not having luck hiring someone w/ a clientele? Maybe walk-ins will come in %26amp; that new stylist will be available to do their hair right away, thus, getting her a clientele.

    1. At the salon I work at, we order from Joico and pantene, according to the needs of the customer's hair.

    2. We order from the phone to a company that has lots of brands not too far away.

3.We order every 2-3 weeks for the normal sized bottles (The kind you would have at home) And the larger bottles are ordered about every 4-5 weeks. We order the heat protectant sprays and hair sprays etc. every 3 weeks also.

    4. Most customers prefer the joico ultra shine shampoo and they come in just for it. Also, another popular service would be facials and manicures, or pedicures in the summer.

    5. For shampoo, we order 5 small or 3 large and for hair sprays we order about 3-5 depending on the season.

6.We like to have the orders shipped to the salon because it is easier.

7.The salon has its own credit card and we pay with that. We have it just for that reason.

    8. Credit is best for my business because it is easier to have one card then having to count out money, especially on busy days.

9.We tend to be busiest from November to February because peoples hair is the most damaged and needs more care.

    10. We offer the most discounts in the summer because we are the lest busiest because people are busy.

I live in Mesquite but work in South Dallas so prefreably stylists from that area. I'm willing to spend up to $50 as long as it's a really good hairstylist. Thanks!!!Can anyone recommend great hair salons and stylists here in Mesquite/Dallas, Texas?

Also any recommendations of any salons around queens would be fine alsoGood Stylist or hair salons in flushing, queens?
Hey, cool i go to school in flushing! Sorry, i don't know about the salons there though.

Do you think it would be a cool idea to have a hair salon were the stylists dressed up as anime characters?

And specialized in crazy hair colors and anime/manga/scene/emo hairstyles? Would anyone go there LOL. I'm daydreaming about combining my love of cosplay for my future career as a hairdresser (I'm in hairdressing school)Do you think it would be a cool idea to have a hair salon were the stylists dressed up as anime characters?
    Nerdy Boom! Nerdy!

    I love it!

There's a dentistry that's done up like Star Trek scenes... maybe there's room in the office complex they work out of... hehe

You'd have to be in a major city though where people have money to burn on what you'd have to charge for such fancy digs though. You can't have your stylists done up and your salon be lame.Do you think it would be a cool idea to have a hair salon were the stylists dressed up as anime characters?
Cool -- maybe, but practical NO! When you open a business (especially these days) you can't specialize too much or you will go belly up before you can say ';cut %26amp; curl.'; Do you really think that there would be enouph people wanting that kind of hair to keep you in business? And that's not even considering the comfort of your stylists. That job is physicaly demanding as it is, and I think there are very few people who would be willing to work in costume all the time, uuuggghhh!
That would be the most awesome hair salon ever! XD If you ever opened a place like that I'd have to hunt you down and beg you for a job there. Some people say it's not professional.. and maybe it isn't, but I know a lot of people love cosplay and anime and would probably love going to get their hair done by their favorite character!

You'd probably get business just based on the fact that your idea is different and unique and no one has probably ever seen something like that before. So despite what everyone seems to be saying.. I think it really is an awesome idea. :D
It would be really cool and unique but most people wouldn't dig it. Too bad cause it would be really fun to get my hair done there. At the same time though the place I get my did at is pretty wild one guy dresses in drag sometimes the girl who shampoos my hair calls everybody female pronouns even grown men. one lady who does hair there has purple and green dreadlocks. My hair dresser hardly wears any clothes plus she swears like a sailor and they play really loud indie music all day and they are always booked up and have a huge waiting list. So maybe it could work.
ummm no? who would go? i know that like some...kinds of people like color there hair weird but dont they like do it themselves. i dont think someone who studied how to make hair look good would do that....

    and whats cosplay...

and isnt anime like japanese cartoon characters...
i would. that would be cool. lol! but it would be unprofessional.

mabe for a kids salon! but not a grown up salon. but it would be so cool to see that!!!!
    no thats not professional
yeah totally but maybe in asia cuz its not gonna cut american standards...
    HOW LAME.
Uhm, no. You'd get no serious clientele.
wow i love it sounds like great i would go
lol, thad be sooo cool, but id never be caught dead in there though lol.
OMG i would love that i would go every effing day!

Where did you go to school for cosmetology? What did/didn't you like about where you went? What do you think the most important thing is when learning this trade?

The reason I ask -- is because I am currently in school for cosmetology. I attend the Ohio Academy - which is a Paul Mitchell Partner School. I LOVE IT! But the school is far away from where I live... and I was just wondering how important where you went to school really is? Am I more likely to get a job if I attended a ';Paul Mitchell'; school vs. any other as long as I pass State Board?? Do you think that having the Paul Mitchell name will help me to make more money, or do you think that my skills will decide that?

Do you think that only knowing one product line is beneficial or more of an inadequecy when hiring?

it doesn't matter what school you go to as long as you get your LICENCE! that is all that matters. you will still need more training after because in the real world no one does pin curls. malys offers classes, they are located in orange, ca and a couple other places. maybe paul m. taught you some better hair cutting techniques. good luck.

hey girl! i loved your answer to my question! your soul is save!

Do hair salons have their best stylists under a certain listing, or is there a special way to ask for the best?

person at the salon? This ';stylist'; yesterday totally screwed my son's hair up and now I am having to take him someplace else. School is about to start and when we got home yesterday he went to his room, slammed his door and was crying. I want to do what I can to make sure I pick the right person to help us. He is 8 years old.Do hair salons have their best stylists under a certain listing, or is there a special way to ask for the best?
They usually have different titles... So the Junior Stylists are usually the ones who aren't that great.. I think....

Then the senior stylists are more expensive but better... I'm not too sure about the whole heirarchy of salons, but I know that them two are definitely in there xDo hair salons have their best stylists under a certain listing, or is there a special way to ask for the best?
it depends on what salon you go to- usually the cheaper ones like Great Clips, and Fantastic Sams only offer one level stylist (usually right out of beauty school), so you really can't ask for a different one there.

But if you go to a higher end salon, like Jade/Aveda or Paul Mitchell, or even Vidal Sasson, theres a price listing on how much per each level, i think its like beginner stylist, experienced stylist, master stylist? it depends on salon- some salons have 2 levels and some salons have 3 levels.

Also, read up on reviews of the salon and see who does the best hair- sometimes experieince doesn't always guarantee the best result. You can search http://www.yelp.com for salons in your areas that get rave reviews, and bad reviews.

    good luck!

I'm a salon manager and NEED stylists...what are new stylists looking for in a job.?

As someone who has been where you are.... you should also decide what you want in employees.

Personally as a stylist now, not a manager, I look for education opportunities, benefits, competitive comission, friendly, professional environment. I am a professional stylist and enjoy a good challenge and continued professional growth.

If that is also the type of salon environment that you want then you should look for those types of people. You can train the skills, you can't change the attitude. Go to local schools and find the people you want. Also talk to local sales reps. They will know the local salon gossip and could send good people your way!

Working in a ';9 to 5'; salon would be an absolute nightmare for me. But maybe not for you. Decide what you want to work with first. And be picky!! You may be stuck with them for a long time!!!I'm a salon manager and NEED stylists...what are new stylists looking for in a job.?

Protocol for changing stylists at salon?

I live in a small town in the midwest with one nice salon. (The rest are of the Pro-Cuts variety.) The stylist who does my hair initially did a great job but my last two colors have been way off what I told her I wanted. When I saw my last color, I told her I was not happy with it and she said ';Well, we'll get it right eventually.'; PULEASE! I really don't want to go back to her, as it is rather pricey to get something you're not pleased with.

I don't want to have to change salons, as this is the only good one in town. Can you give me advice on the protcol for changing stylists inside the salon? I've worked in salons and know the politics.

Oh, and I know someone will say - Just demand she recolor you until you're satisfied. Again, all I will say is that I worked in a salon and definitely don't want someone who is angry at me to be putting color on MY hair! :)

Advice, please??Protocol for changing stylists at salon?
As a Hair Stylist I will say, you could ask the manager or maybe talk to another of the Hair Stylist, they may have in the salon to have it do for you, due that this is the third time and you don't really want another color process, cause as you know you hair suffer from chemical damage with every colorProtocol for changing stylists at salon?
right now as u donot wanna change ur saloon then go back to her and ask her to change it when they say something then what is ur family doing or ur frnds u can cut their half customers or u can again work there and u do the same with her by mistake or anything u can do say the customers not to com here do not satisfy them as they did it to u

    best of luck
find out what day the one you don't want to cut your hair is not at work and go then. Someone else will have to cut your hair.
At my age this has happened over 4-5 times in my life time.. and it is not fun. I feel for you, because beauticians do get offended.

BUT you are paying the bills - you are the boss. Just make an appointment with the other beautician and before you go send a note to your current beautician that you are sorry but you are going to (insert name here) and hopefully there would not be any hard feelings.

Then when you go in, act as if nothing has happened... get in the new beautician's chair and go on with your life.

Remember you are there only a few hours out of the month. But your hair will be with you the rest of the month.

Attn. stylists--how does the salon get hair so clean & shiny?

Whenever I get a haircut I'm always amazed at how clean and shiny my hair looks once it's been washed and blown dry. Is there some sort of trick to this? It can't just be the shampoo because even when I use the same shampoos at home my hair doesn't look so clean, shiny and bouncy. How do they do it??

I'm wondering if perhaps the difference is that salons have filters to remove minerals from the water they wash your hair with whereas I have hard water at home.Attn. stylists--how does the salon get hair so clean %26amp; shiny?
The difference is the length of time we manipulate the hair, scrub if you will, and we are always sure to rinse rinse rinse, if any shampoo or conditioner is left in the hair it leaves a film and thus the hair doesn't shine as well as it can, and also if you will notice, we have lighting that shines down upon your head to enhance the gleam coming from your hair. Also a hairdresser may be appling a little of Bio silk to your hair which creates a false shin in the hair, but it sure leaves it silky and shiny. As far as the bounciness of your hair, when we blow it dry we pull away from your head creating a lift, you can do this by blowing your hair up side down and brushing it the opposite directions, ie brush the back forward, the side up and over your head to the other side and reverse for the other side. These little secrets will help you achieve what we do. Good luck and Good StylingAttn. stylists--how does the salon get hair so clean %26amp; shiny?
They use all the right products, have all the best appliances and know tricks that they can even teach you to do with your hair.
omg i no its like my hair is healthy after i get it washed at the salon and stuff but when i wash it its like regular not all shiny and stuff
its easier for a person to do ur hair then to do it uself. They may have a certain brush and styling product to help make ur hair shine
look @ the shampoo/cond. they use its probably that!

I need a haircut and color, but last time I was at the salon, the stylists were complaining about . . .?

how certain appointments take a long time. One stylist asked the girl who was doing my hair to cover an appointment for her the next day and she told her that the client wasn't one of those that takes a long time. Then they were complaining about appointments that last two hours or whatever. Because of this, I've been thinking about getting the coloring done there and then going someplace else for the haircut. Or should I just do my own hair coloring and get a haircut somewhere else. I should also mention that I really don't like going to salons - I just don't feel comfortable at all. Plus, I don't like spending a lot of money.I need a haircut and color, but last time I was at the salon, the stylists were complaining about . . .?
I don't think that you should just get part of the entire treatment done because of what they were saying

No offense, but it is their job and they chose to do it

If they disliked it that much, they would find another job

I say just go and get the coloring and cut done at the same place

hope it helped :)I need a haircut and color, but last time I was at the salon, the stylists were complaining about . . .?
Dont dye your hair at home, it can tricky! If you have dyed your hair before at salons, dont expect the same results at home. Try a new place, next time you see someone with really nice hair that you like ask them where they go, and about how much they pay. Dont countine going somewhere that you dont feel comfurtable going. Your spending money to get your hair done, to have great hair that you'll love, and service worth paying for! Also remember you pay for what you get.
ooh, dying your own hair at home can totally backfire... i would get the color done at a place, then get it cut somewhere else if the bizoinkas are complaining about doing their job.! [:
defiantly don't dye your own hair at home, it ruins your hair and it can go very wrong. you are paying for the quality. the stylist's need to suck it up its there job, if they don't like spending that much time on one client they needed to pick a different career. you should try a new place, don't always go for cheapest though the quality may show. my mom is a hair stylist and the usual rate for dying hair is about 35 dollars, and about 20 for a cut. i suggest not paying less then that, or more for that matter.

How do hair stylists at chain salons get paid?

I ask this question because my hair stylist is constantly complaining about receiving small tips from customers. Each customer pays $75 on average for her services and usually tips about $5-$8. What portion of this money goes to her?How do hair stylists at chain salons get paid?
    depending on the chain.

Most pay Min wage or 45% which ever is greater over a two week period. So on 75 she is seeing around 33 dollars then her tax is out of that. So lets say she is doing 5 people a day at 75, she brings in 375 a day but her share is 168.75. Not bad if her days are always like that. she take home for that day is around 126.

As a stylist myself I feel it is wrong to ever comment to a customer about your tips, they are not required nor does everyone have the money to give one.How do hair stylists at chain salons get paid?
some just get paid commission plus tips it just depends on where they work
Probably about 10% of the total. I worked at Smartstyle in Walmart for a while, and we got 10% of each sale, tips, and a small hourly wage of $3.15per hour. So pretty much, tips are what you depend on.

Do you feel most salons/stylists dislike long haired customers?

I have been going to alot of salons, i only found 1 stylist who loved my hair long and wanted me to keep it that way.

Most are quick with the sicissor and dying to cut all your hair, or have an attitude if u come every 5 or 7 months for a trim.

I think its because long haired customers dont get trims as often as short haired or medium length,, agree? so they dont make $$Do you feel most salons/stylists dislike long haired customers?
I've noticed that most 'male' stylists are gay and know that most men love long hair. So naturally they want all women to have that 'cute' short hairdo that men don't like. Need I say more?Do you feel most salons/stylists dislike long haired customers?
I have clients with long hair that only come twice per year and clients with long hair that come every 4 weeks, it all depends on the client. A hairdresser shouldn't have a bad attitude about how often you come.

If it's just a matter of them being scissor happy and wanting to cut your hair shorter, I'm not too surprised about that. With long hair, there's only two options you have with haircuts: layers or no layers. If you've mentioned that you'd like something fresh or different, that could be one of the reasons they try to get you to cut it (so you'll have more options).

Money-wise, if the hairdresser is established, he/she won't really be making money from their haircut customers, anyway. Color is where the money is! But, if it's a hairdresser that isn't really on their feet yet, or just doesn't have a lot of business, then they may be worried about the money, but I wouldn't think it's likely that they'd stress about you not getting your hair cut very often.
I don't dislike long haired customers unless they want a perm! jk Some stylists do get upset if you only come in a few times a year but the way the economy is, they had better get used to it. I have regulars who come every 3 weeks and some who only make it in twice a year. I'm flattered that they come to me no matter how often or not so often. You are right about the money aspect of it, most stylists work on a commission basis so the more people in their chair, the more money they get. Any good stylist will give you ideas to flatter your face but at the same time, try to accomodate your wishes.
    I've started getting my friend to trim me, because I've become so fed up with stylists who insist that what I want, in terms of hair, is less important than what's in style. The last professional haircut I got, the stylist said, ';You'd be so pretty if you'd let me cut your hair.'; (The implication was clear that without the cut she wanted to give me, I wasn't pretty.) I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying, ';If you'd get your teeth worked on, so would you.';

I *love* my long hair and don't intend to follow fashion again in my life. This suits me.
That's how you tell the good stylists from the bad ones. A good stylists will work with you and your hair. If you treated a long-haired customer nice, they will come back to you when they want their hair cut short. The stylists that do not like customers with long hair because they want the money with out doing any of the work. And there are a lot of cool styles for long hair.
You know I have never thought of that! My hair stylist loves my hair long. Maybe they think you would look better with short hair, but then again you do have a pretty good theory. I would say find one hair stylist that does your hair the best and knows what they are doing. Don`t do walk ins I hear that you get crappy hair cuts. Get a person who does not have attitude also, you don`t want to see a b**chy person every however so often you go.

    Hope that helped!

    Good Luck!

    --Kenzie--
I think you are right in feeling this way. Not only because you only come for a trim every now and again but also because they want to try the latest haircut. They can't do this with someone who wants to keep it long.
Well my hair stylist loooooooooooves my hair long.

But no, generally you do not tip the owners. Thats how I've always been told. You tip the workers, but seeing as how the whole amount goes to the owner, they don't require the tip.

You're paying $300 anyways. Thats a big amount, no need to tip!A salon owner charges $50 more for a cut than his stylists.Total for highlights/cut =$300 Do I tip the owner?

There's no reason to ever tip the owner, even if he charges the same price as everyone else or is the only stylist. That's up to you though.
Well.. I guess if he's the one that styles your hair and such.

I guess it's just preference. He does get more than his stylist.. but if he does a really good job I wouldn't mind tipping.

Are there any hair salons that have stylists who do dreads in or near Knox County, Ohio?

I've waited long enough to grow my hair out nice and long, and its time for dreads. Any suggestions on where to go? Also, if you have dreads, can you give me advice before I get them? Thanks! Are there any hair salons that have stylists who do dreads in or near Knox County, Ohio?
my top advice would to definatly get it done at a salon because they know what they are doing and if you dont and attempt to do it at home it will probably end up looking worse than you would like

most big salon chains will do it for you if you go in and explain what you want done they will set aside a morning or so to get it done

also they will be there to go back to if you have any problems and most will give you a cheaper price if you go back reguarly

oh and some more advice, you will probably get loads of people saying your hair is disgusting and ugly etc.... but dreads are the coolest hairstyle in my opinion and loads of others and just enjoy having them!

  • Can anyone recommend great hair salons and stylists here in Jackson, Mississippi?

Hi, Can anyone recommend a great stylist or salon in or around Jackson, Mississippi? I would like to find a stylist up to date, and who could give a modern face fitting cut. Someone whom you could just tell ';I will leave it up to you?';, and they would give you a terrific cut. ThanksCan anyone recommend great hair salons and stylists here in Jackson, Mississippi?
She's not in Jackson, but she is in Meridian (about 90 miles down I-20). Her name is Rachelle and I have absolutely fallen in love with what she's done with my hair! Email me if you'd like her number.

As for Jackson, I'm sorry but I don't really know the area that well. I do know, however, that I have received some pretty heinous cuts from these people, so be extremely wary!

Hairdressing info, updates etc... for qualified stylists/salon owners?

I have just taken over a salon and was just wondering whether there are any good websites/organisations that can keep me updated on new products/legislations.. any good forums for stylists to discuss/exchange training techniques/info..any good websites that offer online info just so i can refresh/train online for free xHairdressing info, updates etc... for qualified stylists/salon owners?
If its a UK business then there is a federation of british hairdressers.

If you become a member you can display this on your window. (More professional). They will also give you member benefits like shows, training opportunities, legislation etc.

Also, go on the salons direct website, they also have products, equipment, training (latest styles etc)

Can you cut hair extensions to the size you need? And can hair stylists in salon put them on for you?

    Thanks.

xxCan you cut hair extensions to the size you need? And can hair stylists in salon put them on for you?
yes you should definitely go to a stylist to put extensions in and cut them to your desired style .However you might want to make sure that stylist is an expert in hair extensions also ? Good luck !Can you cut hair extensions to the size you need? And can hair stylists in salon put them on for you?
The best thing to do is to go to a professional stylists and have them put the extensions in. They can then cut the extensions into the style of your choice. I would not recommend cutting the extensions yourself. You should consult a stylists with an expertise in hair extensions.

  • This question is for hair stylists and salon clients : pros and cons to salon departmentalization??

i am stylist in a non dept. salon environment. i really like both cutting %26amp; coloring hair, but now our manager wants us to be dept. so i would only do color.

im really frustrated at this point, and really dont even want to stick around to see how it will work out. so far its been just a mess as far is booking goes. its making our clients upset and i am really begining to think there is no benifit to this for the stylists, just the salon.

can anyone shed some light on this subject. if you are a stylist, what duration of time are you allowed to preform services? what happens when you have a new client and are seeing them for the first time and see that their down for a partial, but actually need all over color and highlights, and a condtioning treat.?(which will make them late to see the cutter) do you do it? or do you tell them youll do it next time?

if you visit a salon, do you prefer to see just one person for cut and color, or doest it matter to you? This question is for hair stylists and salon clients : pros and cons to salon departmentalization??
I don't like it. If your a good stylist you should be able to do everything. Also, most customers know who to go to for certain services anyway. This question is for hair stylists and salon clients : pros and cons to salon departmentalization??
You should go work at a different salon.
Be more professional by offering an advice to the new client what she needed to be done but don't push her to do it right away. You might push her away. But if she asked for it then do a complete make over for her.

If I'm the client I will prefer to see just one person to handle my cut and color, that is my preference.

try a local cosmetology school and they may be able to help you find help. or try to post listings in classified ads like the local news paper or on a web site like yahoo classifieds.

good luck!!Where can I find Stylists for my new Salon?
    use yahoo job site...
I would suggest posting an add in local newspapers. Or you could check with the employment office in your area.

    Good luck.
    monster.com or the local paper
I would say craigslist...and make sure you post in the los angeles area. Also, you should try local news papers, and posting inside stores close to the area where you are going to have your shop. Oh and you might want to try beauty schools were students will be graduating school. There are some great stylists at the marinello beauty schools.

I have been a hair stylist for 8 years, and just started a CNA class, and got an offer to manage a salon?? ?

After 8 years and a tough time getting a job in the last year, I started a 6 week CNA class. I recieved a job offer as a salon manager just a week ago, from a resume online from March. I am confused and torn as to what I want to do and what holds a better future for me. I am 30 and have three kids at home. Not sure what difference that makes but its just backround. I do love doing hair and the industry and I seem to like CNA so far. Any advice would be greatly appreciatedI have been a hair stylist for 8 years, and just started a CNA class, and got an offer to manage a salon?? ?
The management job would pay off a lot more, unless you decide to further your nursing career......CNA career isn't something that I would choose for the rest of my life. I have been a hair stylist for 8 years, and just started a CNA class, and got an offer to manage a salon?? ?
I've been going to beauty salons for 55 years. I can guarantee you that beauticians earn a lot more money than someone who is a CNA. I live in Atlanta and pay $35 to a woman who spends 30 minutes doing my hair. That's $70 an hour. That's twice what my husband, a college graduate, earns, and he's overe 70 years old. Think about it.
CNAs do the absolute worst of the worst jobs at hospitals %26amp; nursing homes. its probably not something that youd want to do forever. you can still get the certification, but id manage the salon. CNAs dont make a lot of money but they usually get good benefits. but a management position should get you full benefits too. it depends on wheather youd like to take orders or be in charge. the nurses can be really big B****ES to you too.

ive been urinated on, pooped on, bled on, bit, pinched, %26amp; called names. ive been exposed to contagious diseases, blamed by families for hospital policies %26amp; had an ostomy bag shaken into my face.

but ive also made a sick person smile, brightened someones day, listened to great stories %26amp; forged friendships.

you need to be prepared to be saddened when you see suffering %26amp; when you walk in %26amp; see your favorite resident or patient not sitting where they always sit, because theyve passed on.

its great %26amp; its so hard.

you really dont make too much money, but sometimes you feel a special feeling because of the work that youre doing %26amp; thats even better, until you need a new purse or cute shoes or something.

an area where there can be better money is in home care or hospice. if you have the kind of personality that can handle hospice, that might be worth it. but i dont know anything about working in a salon.

hopefully that gives you some insight.
I was (and am ) in the very prediciment as you. You say you are 30 with 3 kids. I'm only going to assume they are still somewhat young. If you are a manager of a salon, you will need to be on-call, so to speak, all hours the salon is open. I was in management at my old salon and I actually left the job because it took so much time away from my family that any extra ';bonus'; I got, wasn't even worth it in the end.

BUT my job was to be a stylist AND manager. I couldn't just do one. I was worn out. YOu need to decided what your priorities are in your life right now and then go with which job feels right for you.

    ~~

After reading the other post, I want to remind you that many salons, especially in this economy don't offer benefits or are really bad ones at that. Make sure if you go into management that they pay you a salary and you are not on commission. If you get paid commission as a stylist but are expected to be a manager, you will actually LOSE money because you will not be able to service your clients as much as you used to. Being a manager/stylist would pull you away from where you make your money( from your clients) . That's the problem I had with it.

    ~~

Also, a huge misconception. We get a commission off your service. The stylist did not receive the whole $35. She probably got at most 50% of that, minus taxes minus healthcare minus any 401k offered.. oh yeah... and if she didn't have anyone else in her book that day...THAT WAS ALL SHE MADE.

Take it from me...I'm seriously pissed off at Oprah and Suzie Orman right now for telling people to stop getting haircuts because now I'm sitting around all day not making a dime. (now I'm actually thinking about going into nursing!)

    ~~ok- I think I'll stop replying now~~ lol

    For Salon Stylists?

How do you maximize your in-salon productivity? For Salon Stylists?
Treat your client to a conditioning treatment as an introduction to the benefits of it. Tell them what you normaly charge %26amp; that it's on you. The next time suggest that same treatment. It works. Just keep suggesting it each service. You give a little. But It's paying for itself in the long run...

Also ask your salon rep for the beauty supply for samples of the products you sell in the salon. This not only encourages your client to buy the product but you are giving them something they should use. Clients love free stuff. They feel like their getting cared for.

Try booking your clients in advance at the end of every service. This not only ensures they get service but your gauranteed another time slot to be filled.

Try doing an incentive for your clients to refer people to you. Offer them another service like a manicure if they refer you 2 or more clients. Or maybe give a percentage off their next service...

I've found that when I give a little the client gives more back...

Go around the salon where clients are getting other services done (like a manicure) and introduce yourself. Tell them who you are. Tell them what you can do. Hand them your card. I've had many clients from doing this.

Get out there and promote yourself. Always carry your business cards %26amp; hand them out. Frequent some of the local businesses around the area. Don't be shy. tell them what you can do.

Always take records of your clients and have them fill out their info.Including their adresses %26amp; phone numbers. Send them coupons if you haven't seen them in a while. Or just a little note that shows you care for their business. Write down some of the things you talk about with them so your reminded about things ( like if their daughter was getting married or a vacation they were on) ( Or even how they like their coffee) Those are the little things but clients remember that stuff %26amp; feel special.

Recently for my new clients I send a postcard they day after the service to thank them %26amp; personalize it in my own way. It almost always gets them back for more service...

Clients always want the best treatment. Encourage them to get other services in the salon. Your co- workers need business too. I'm sure they would do the same for you.

Always remember you provide service. That's what clients are there for. Clients feel better when their remembered, valued, and most importantly heard. Pay attention to what they like. Listen to what they are saying. This is important because it is all about them.

Hope that helps. Sorry for writing too much...For Salon Stylists?
You should look into the Wyane Grund business teachings, very insightful. Do you want to be the stylist that waits for the busy bus to come or the one who fills their chair. Start booking all clients in advance, like their next apt or even next two at the time of their last apt. Its like they think oh no she's so busy I might not get in so then your filling your chair.
Carefully booking clientele according to how long you take with each one( i.e., if you take 15 minutes to apply a color to one client and 30 minutes to apply another, then you could book the two 30 minutes apart and apply the second while the first is processing) or (if you do more than one person in a family you could book them together and work on them at the same time). If any chemical service has a processing time of 45 minutes then you coul allow yourself a simple haircut (mens or childs) during the processing time. All this of course as long as they show up on time for you.

    Question for you salon stylists/workers...?

I dyed my hair myself a permanent auburn way back, probably a few months now, and the roots are starting to show, but i'm naturally dark brunette so it isn't that obvious. My question is, I want to dye my hair myself a semi-permanent chocolate brown, would it be okay to do this? Or would I need to bleach my whole hair and start from scratch? It was my first time with a permanent dye so I really have no idea... lol.. help please! :)Question for you salon stylists/workers...?
As long as you're not trying to go lighter than your current base color, there's no need to lift the color first (which is what you are referring to by ';bleach';). There's nothing wrong with adding brown on auburn, but chances are the color will not come out looking like the color on the box; instead, your hair will probably turn out brown with red undertones. If you want to completely eliminate the red, use a toner/red color corrector on your hair either before applying haircolor, or add one full packet to the dye mix before applying it to your hair. You can buy toner at your local beauty supply store for about $1 per packet.Question for you salon stylists/workers...?
    Hi,

Well, I'm no expert but I don't think you have to bleach as you're not going lighter, or could just dye a few hair and see if it turns out OK first.

Hey, drop me a line at topothetown3@yahoo.co.uk if you'd like to chat about what I can do underwater. Wink wink nudge nudge lol
As long as the chocolate brown is darker than the auburn you dyed it, it will work fine!

Should my stylist have told me she raised her price over $30 before I came to the salon?

She is in a salon out of town and I drive 40 mins to go to her. This was my second time.I think she is very good at what she does but I feel it's a pretty huge rate increase. As I was in her chair she mentioned her hair cut rate has gone up about $10 but never mentioned thay color has gone up too. What do you think should she have called her client to let me know of the increase?Should my stylist have told me she raised her price over $30 before I came to the salon?
I don't know about the call before hand - It would have been polite since you have to drive so far, but I would have been ticked if she had me in the chair before she told you that. I would find a different stylist and advise her why you are leaving. - -But that's just me.Should my stylist have told me she raised her price over $30 before I came to the salon?
No, she can't be calling all her clients to let them know of the increase and it was only your second time seeing her. She might send emails in the future. It very hard to find a good hair stylist but only you can decide what's best for you.
She should have told you when you called to make the appointment. My hairdresser changed salons and when I called to make the appointment, she gave me the updated details and new prices that she was charging. I kept her anyways because she is good and worth every penny! It's not fair that she waited until you got in the chair to tell you!
No I don't think she should have called you but the salon should have advised you that they were going to be having a price increase in the following services. And they should have advised you at your last appointment or at the beginning of the appointment you just went to.
well i guess you can consider this is a lesson learned...next time ask..have your prices changed????..before driving across town....but i do believe she should have told you before she started on your hair..or when you called to schedule your appointment

  • I have been a hair stylist for 15 yrs, and want to move to an upscale salon/spa in another area.?

Unfortunately the owner passed away at a salon that I was very happy at, so I had to move. In the process I have lost a large number of clientele, and this new salon is barely bringing in business. I am a very talented hairstylist, and would like to move to a more upscale salon/spa. The problem is, I would have little or no book to bring, and would have to start over again. Do you think it is possible that a place would pay me a salary until I reached that number in commission. Any advise would be extremely appreciated.I have been a hair stylist for 15 yrs, and want to move to an upscale salon/spa in another area.?
Not a stylist but there is website called behindthechair.com and they have stylist that will help you better.

When going to a salon/spa for a haircut, is it customary to tip the stylist?

I'm going to go to a decent salon to get my hair cut (for once). Prices are about $40 for a cut. Is it customary to tip above these prices, or is that just at places where hair cuts are like the service minimum ($12-$16)?

That's where I'm going, if it helps.

Well if I gave someone a haircut and received no tip I would be a little offended. You should tip 10-15%
it's customary to tip 10 - 20% of the total cost of the service.

for example: if your cut costs $40 then 20% of that would be an $8.00 tip.
no, I never do. I never even thought about it.

Is it rude to change stylists within the same salon? What would you do?

The first stylist did not know what to do with my hair texture. She did not do what I told her to do, and I ended up leaving with a big afro. Then she met me in the parking lot on the way to the car and offered to have me come back the same day so she could try and do what I told her to do in the first place. This was not feasible because my toddler was antsy and exhausted and my husband and toddler was ready to go home. She gave me her personal number to call her back and make arrangements for another day. I called her back a few days later. She said she would call me right back, but she never did.

There was another stylist in there that was familiar with my hair texture. I think she might be able to help me more than the first stylist. Would it be rude to call the salon and make arrangements with her instead? What if the first stylist sees me in the other stylists chair and recognizes me? Wouldn't it be rude to do this?Is it rude to change stylists within the same salon? What would you do?
I know it seems like a big deal. But it really isn't. Just switch - you have no answering to do. YOU ARE THE CUSTOMER. this happened to me once. the one girl i went to really screwed up my hair color and so when i returned to get it fixed i chose a different stylist to do the color correct and when the one that screwed up my hair asked me why i didnt come back to her i just said that i was afraid she would totally fry my hair and i didnt feel like she was the right stylist for me anymore. i then started scheduling my appointments when she wasnt in the shop.
Under those circumstances, use another stylist in the SAME shop. If the first one says ANYTHING tell her, not so quietly that she never returned your phone call to fix the mess she'd made of your hair on the last visit. It is she that is wrong, not you.

Hopefully she'll keep her mouth shut and not say anything.
I've been in the same situation. I wasn't too impressed with what the first stylist did but I really liked what her co-worker did with other customers. I've been too scared to ask for the other stylist because the first stylist was really nice and I don't want to hurt her feelings. I wish I have an answer for you and you asked a great question.
I would go to a different salon. If you are not happy with the way your hair came out at that salon, then there not a good chance it would come out good with a different sylist since most salons have the stylists use the same techniques.

I would look for an upscale professional salon. Call and ask before going, and describe your hair type. see if they are experienced enough.

Usually you can find the better salons in the city.

Nope! It's not rude to change stylist within same salon. Why? Because stylists aren't being paid just to serve you nor to serve selected customers only. They are being paid to accommodate whoever wants to avail of the salons services. If in case you tried changing one and your ';stylist'; reacted...';negatively';, thank God that you changed one since you just discovered that her/his values is not ok. Nevertheless, if you tried changing then your ';stylist'; accepted it with opne heart, that would mean she/he will strive better to improve his skills and would later try to strive more to enhance his craft for him to win you again! Changing stylist would serve as a test for them and for us to discover their inner values. Besides, we feel more confident with people whom we trust well.....

Went to hair salon to be come a blonde and well the hair stylist messed up!!?

Ok last July I went to Champers Salon to some blonde high lights in my brunette hair and it was fine. But NOW I want to be a full blonde so I went back to Champers Salon and saw the stylist told her I want to be a full blonde and I want to get bangs and also long layers in my hair (My hair is half way down my back). She said ';Ohhhh well bleach is so bad for your hair I dont think it will be good.'; And me not knowing much about bleach etc. I was like ohhhh then what will you do? She said i think its better to high light all the brown thats still in your hair so blend in with the blonde that you already have and then you will look like an all over blonde. Well to make a long story short.....my hair is MORE BROWN now then before I walked in those doors. And she only put ONE long layer in the back of my hair...I have been upset all night last night and I want to go back there and demand my money back in full... I sat there for 3 hrs and 10 minutes...FOR WHAT??? To be more brown...I wanted to be blonde!!! I also paid $177.00 practically for my bangs to be cut...cuz I got no long layers and brown hair...Please help!! I am so sad.Went to hair salon to be come a blonde and well the hair stylist messed up!!?
you need to demand your money back and go somewhere else.Went to hair salon to be come a blonde and well the hair stylist messed up!!?
You should walk back in there and tell them exactly whats happened, tell them to pay you back and/or give you the bleaching free... if they continue to refuse, tell them thats fine, you'll just let everyone you know just what happened... that usually gets them up and running... because who knows? the girl they messed up on might just be the most popular girl in town... so just try this....
If they won't refund your money just dye it yourself with some store bought hair dye. Its a hell of a lot cheaper and you can get the bleach and ammonia free blonde hair dye if you are afraid of damaging your hair.
go back theere and tell them you want it done again for free, and make shure you get someone else to do it. if your unhappy they should do it again the what my salon does

im from nyc and have been here in SD for about 3 yrs now and i have yet to find a good hairstylist especially one that knows how to blow dry hair w/o using a flat iron as their main source to dry hair..w/e happen to using rolos and a good blow dry??!??!Does anyone know of any dominican or puertorican hair stylist or hair salons here in San Diego?
I know how you feel. Apparently there aren't many Dominicans or Puerto Ricans in California- so when I was out there for a year, I pretty much had to deal with whatever I could do myself.

Anyway- what you're looking for is an ethnic hair salon. What I'd do is go to your telephone book %26amp; go to the salon section. Start calling different places %26amp; ask if they have anyone who is a specialist in ethnic hair. Ask if you can speak to them or leave your name %26amp; number for them to call you back. Ask them about their techniques (especially the drying technique, since that is what you're concerned about) %26amp; if you feel comfortable about what they're telling you- ask if you can make an appointment to come in.

I live in NYC %26amp; trust me when I tell you that I know what you're going through. I moved to Delaware for awhile %26amp; I went from being able to go into any salon %26amp; them knowing what to do- to me not being able to go into any salon.

    Good luck!!

New salon made hair too Dark. Going back to usual stylist, what can she do?

Long story short I have been coloring, then highlighting my hair for years so I have a lot of dye in my hair but have cut most of it off. For some reason whenever I get my hair dyed at the salon my hair after a month the dye will fade and go back to this orangey shade. I always go lighter usually a cinnamon color. My natural color is a very dark brown. The girl I go to is really good but last time she did my hair it faded within 3 weeks so I made the stupid decision of going to another salon my friend recommended me too. The girl did it horribly and the highlights look brassy, even though I just got my crown done and I asked for a chestnut base and the color came out almost black, even darker then my natural. I spoke with the owner who said all she could do was add more highlights and the base may lighten up with washing it. I actually would like my money refunded but what else can I do. I am going to go back to my usual girl on Saturday even though I feel bad I tried someone other then her in the first place lol. I want my hair back to one shade, the cinnamon color I usually have. If she dyes my hair over with my usual color over will it take? Should I just have her strip it out? I know something can be done and the other place just didn't want to or don't know what to do and are just unprofessional, plus I wouldn't trust them touching my hair again.New salon made hair too Dark. IT WILL LIGHTEN WITH SHAMPOOINGNew salon made hair too Dark. Going back to usual stylist, what can she do?
Unfortunately the salon in question is correct. If your hair was colored too dark the only thing that you can do is more highlights. Hair color will only lift (lighten) your natural hair, it can darken colored hair but not lighten. More highlights is pretty much your only option at this point. I assume by ';stripping'; your color that you're referring to a malibu treatment. This really isn't going to give you the results that you want. If I were you I'd go back to my regular colorist with my tail between my legs, admit it was a mistake and let her do the best she can to restore your desired color. Don't expect it to look the way you want it to after the first service. Whenever you're making a change it normally takes at least 3 processes to achieve your hair color goal. If your color lasts 3 weeks without fading, that's pretty good, most likely you just need to go to the salon %26amp; have your colorist freshen it up with the proper toner. This is usually a $12 service. General rule: highlight every 6-8 weeks, tone it every 3. Toner is a temporary color service designed to counteract brassiness (which is commonly mistaken for fading).

If you ever decide to change colorists you may want to ask her to explain the color wheel to you. If she can't do that then she doesn't understand the chemical process well enough to allow her to touch your hair.

I want to be a hair stylist but I have never worked in salon any suggestions?

I graduated from cosmetology school 3 years ago. I have my license but before I took my boards I got offered a job with good benefits that I couldn't resist and I was scared to do hair anyways. Now I am still a little scared but I know I can do this and I am willing to take classes the salons may offer. I have a real desire to do this I have wanted to since I was a little girl but my fear held me back now I am afraid it may be too late does anyone have any suggestions?I want to be a hair stylist but I have never worked in salon any suggestions?
if you do not want to jump into it completely, being an assistant would be a good start, you could get a feel for a salon atmosphere and you could watch the stylists and pick up on their skills, beauty school only prepares you for the state board test not the real world. going into the business slowly may help take some of your fear away.

I am a hair stylist that just switched salons a few months ago what is the best way to build up my clientele?

i have been doing hair for 3 years but a lot of that time i worked part time as a receptionist and the other doing hair. this past december my salon got new owners and changed the whole salon without a lot of notice. So i found a new salon job but wasnt able to get in touch with most of my clients. over the past 7 months i have been able to keep only 5-10 of my existing clients and have gained some at my new salon but i want to be busier. we have tried fliers, we even put our salon news on the pizza boxs at the pizza place near by. i just need some new ideas of how to get my name out there and really increase my business. i would love to hear what has worked for other people after they have started a stylist job at a new salon. thanks a lot

ps- i am 5 1/2 months pregnant so i am going to be taking off time in oct/nov/dec for the baby so i need to get clients fast and keep them while i am on maternity leaveI am a hair stylist that just switched salons a few months ago what is the best way to build up my clientele?
I'm not sure how much this will help (or if it will help), but have you considered having a blog? I find google's blogspot pretty easy to use.

I can see that a blog with hair tips, product reviews, and other related posts would be useful. Plus if you use keywords (tags) like hairstylist, specials, and you city name in your description, your link will turn up anytime someone uses a search engine to search for a hairstylist in your area.

Good luck.I am a hair stylist that just switched salons a few months ago what is the best way to build up my clientele?
Joy R is right on the money. Act like a professional! Not hanging on to your client list was a mistake - so work on planning ahead.. keep those client cards - it is all about making the customer feel special so that they do not want to go anywhere else. A good neck rub does wonders! I would not be much interested in switching to a stylist that may be leaving soon - so if your baby break is going to be short let your people know that you are not going to leave them hanging. Ask for referrals.
Encourage people to talk about themselves and make them feel interesting. Then put some notes on an index card after they leave so that next time they book you can look at it ahead of time and then ask them stuff like ';How did your sister's surprise birthday party go?'; or ';How was your vacation?'; or whatever.
